Poland Saved Britain From The Luftwaffe

The battle of Britain was a planned and vicious attack on Britain by German air forces. Hitler's assumption was that with British and French troops being defeated in Normandy, they would both retreat leaving him free to focus on invading Russia. It transpired that this would not happen, especially since Churchill was elected who took a firm philosophy that stopping Hitler meant fighting fire with fire.

Britain was not Hitler’s focus, more of an annoyance than anything and he planned to eliminate Britain from the equation with a full scale bombing attack. His primary targets were airfields, attacking these would render the RAF redundant making a fight back impossible. Things did not go so smoothly however, Churchill ordered the RAF into the skies to stop the Lufftwaffee in their tracks.

The battle continued throughout the summer of 1940, and since Hitlers onslaught of RAF bases had not gone to plan, he diverted his attention to British cities, with the aim of taking out key industries. Hitler never planned to go through with the Blitz, he thought the mere announcement that British cities would be attacked would scare the UK into surrendering.

The Blitz destroyed major parts on London and other big cities, killing civilians along the way, but the continued valiant air attacks on the Lufftwaffe eventually caused them to retreat. Who should take the praise for this? You guessed it, the Poles. Polish Pilots had a much higher kill rate than any other nationality during the battle of Britain

Next time you go to the bank and get out a loan, or pożyczki as the Poles say, remember how lucky you are to have freedom, and when you use a loan calculator, or kalkulator kredytowy as they say in Poland, remember that you are doing so only because you live in a democratic, capitalist society that may have been very different had the Battle of Britain been won by Hitler.
